About MedStar Institute of Quality and Safety

The MedStar Health Institute for Quality and Safety (MIQS) aligns with and catalyzes the intellectual power within MedStar Health. The MIQS Team is devoted to supporting the MedStar Health quality and safety mission through synergistic interaction with our partners at the MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2); MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI); National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare; and MedStar’s Simulation, Training & Education Lab (SiTEL).

The Institute is home to the Center for Open, Honest Communication, the International Training Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery, the Center for Engaging Patients as Partners, the Academy for Emerging Leaders in Patient Safety, and an ever-evolving array of quality and safety research, education and training programs and clinical improvement programs. The MIQS Mission is shaped by the Quadruple Aim — Better Care, Better Health in Communities, Lower Costs, and Healthcare Workforce Support — and our priority areas of action and Centers of Expertise are built to address the related needs, which are:

  • Patient Safety Innovation
  • Improving Health Care Diagnosis
  • Open and Honest Communication to advance Transparency, Trust and Healing
  • Patient and Family Engagement in Improvement Work
  • Caring for Our Caregivers
  • Spread of Bloodless Medicine and Surgery
  • Effective Care Coordination
  • Prevention & treatment of leading causes of Morbidity & Mortality through Continuous Improvement
  • Health and Well-Being of the Communities we Serve and Healthcare Workers who Serve them
  • Making Quality Care more Affordable

We invite you to use this website and the content contained within as a resource, or even better, join us for a CANDOR learning event, a 2018 Telluride Experience session, or register to be in the inaugural class of the Master’s in Patient Safety & Quality Leadership in January, 2018. What Others Are Saying

CANDOR is really a way for Dignity Health to take some of the basics--root cause analysis, event investigation, disclosure, across 40 hospitals to higher level that's more patient- and clinician-centric. It aligns with our values, our mission and who we are.

It's so critical to talk about an event after it occurs. We know errors happen in healthcare but we're still not quite sure how to address them. What's really important is to work out that open communication that we know patients and providers want...How do we talk about it afterwards? That's where CANDOR really comes in because we're able to talk with patients and families openly, and with our provider too who are very impacted by these outcomes as well.

I wanted to email you directly to: 1) say hi, 2) let you know how our Napa crew is still going strong and keeping in touch, 3) express how grateful I am to you all, and; 4) give you a quick update on what I've been up to! I finished developing a team dynamics curriculum called "Team Health" for medical students. Starting with their orientation, new students are exposed to the importance of collaboration, respect, clear communication, and leadership. It is taught with a patient safety lens, recognizing that medicine is inherently collaborative and that our ability to work with others directly impacts the well-being of those for whom we care...Thank you for being a major force in making this happen. I really learned a lot from you all. Thank you for being you and all that you do!

CANDOR is the best thing we can do for our patients. They trust us to do the right thing, and we don't want to break that trust. The only way you can do that is to be open, honest and transparent. CANDOR is exactly that.

The work that is done at MedStar and the support from corporate is deeply appreciated. This (CANDOR) is the direction we want to go as a system. It definitely feeds into our values.

Every aspect of this experience (AELPS Faculty Development Session) was very positive and relevant to what I struggle with at my organization.

This is by far the BEST conference I have ever attended.  The small intimate setting is unique.  I have learned so much.  Thank you!
